Description
Deliciously soft and chewy homemade pretzels, perfect for snacking or serving at parties.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 4 tsp sugar
- 2 tsp salt
- 3 tsp active dry yeast
- 10 cups water
- 2/3 cup baking soda
- 2 large egg yolks (+ 2 tbsp water for wash)
- 1/2 cup butter (melted)
- 1 pinch sea salt
Instructions
- In a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook, stir together warm water, sugar, and salt until the sugar is dissolved. Sprinkle yeast over the top and allow to bloom for approx. 5 minutes.
- Add the flour to the stand mixer bowl and beat adding melted butter in a slow drizzle. Beat with the dough hook on medium speed for 5 minutes or until a ball forms and the dough pulls together and away from the sides of the bowl.
- Grease a bowl with olive oil and transfer dough to the bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and rest in a warm place, for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper. Spritz with nonstick cooking spray or lightly grease with oil.
- In a large pot bring water and baking soda to a boil. Then, grease a cutting board lightly with oil. Divide dough into 8 to 10 equal pieces. Roll into a rope about 24 inches long.
- Twist dough into pretzel shapes by creating a U. Then twist loose ends together and fold the twist back over to the middle of the U and press together.
- One at a time, drop pretzels into the boiling water and allow to boil for 30 seconds. Remove using a slotted turner and immediately place on the prepared baking sheet.
- Whisk together water and egg yolk in a bowl. Use pastry brush over pretzels and immediately sprinkle with kosher salt.
- Bake for 12 to 14 minutes or until tops of pretzels are golden brown.
- **Pretzel bites cut into 1-inch pieces will take about 5 minutes in a preheated 350-degree oven.**
Notes
- These pretzels can be enjoyed fresh out of the oven or cooled and stored in an airtight container for later.
- For a different flavor, try adding cheese or garlic powder to the dough.
